‘Lookout,’ shouted Rashford.

The bulamba brushed the protective film, creating blue and red sparks. The crowd surged further back, with Rashford scrambling to lead the retreat.

Amelia pushed through the stampede toward the front edge. She ran alongside the creature, so close she could see her reflection in its eye. It flowed past her, and she dived onto its back at the point where it tapered into a tail. The flesh was warm and spongy, allowing her to cling on without fear of slipping. She relaxed into the smooth undulations of its body. It made no attempt to shake her off, but instead it swept away from the Astro-dome, its bulbous eyes swivelling to gaze back at her.

Amelia eased herself down the tail until she was level with the jagged chunk of metal. Close up, it was thicker, and a crust of green pus covered the flesh around the wound. Someone had driven the spike in with force. It was too deep to have been an accident.

Amelia wasted no time in grabbing the cold metal with both hands. It gave way a fraction, but she needed more leverage, so she scrambled to stand up. After synchronising with the sway of the creature to steady herself, she yanked the splinter clear. The bulamba bellowed and twitched but maintained its smooth flight.

Amelia sat astride the creature’s tail, holding the spear of metal aloft and letting the exhilaration of the ride flow over her. Girl and space-whale swept through nothingness until the Astro-dome shrank to a small distant light to the left of Earth’s blue-and-white ball.

The bulamba belched a resounding series of grunts. ‘Ooh, whoop-whoop.’
